Deep within the enchanting rolling fields, lived a shepherd boy. His life was essentially pure, simple, and honest. His primary duty was mainly to care for his herd of ewes.

Their low murmuring and the rustling of the wind among the single tree on the hilltop were his only co-dwellers. Day after day, looking out for his responsibilities instilled in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.

However, there were occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. In one such instance out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome plot.

Tales of predators hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the town. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a trick on the inhabitants.

One morning he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills to help but discovered no wolf.

The boy chuckled at the dilemma on their faces. This game continued for a few days more. However, one morning, a real wolf here actually charge at the herd. The shepherd boy raced for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to receive a lesson on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.

The story of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once lost, is difficult to regain. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
